In the exploratory study was realized that this sport was employed as a contributor element in the process of fight against Apartheid in the African country, contributing to the maintenance of the new power relations brought from the 90s of XX century. The analysis was related to the subjective metaphors (GOATLY, 1997) in the statements of the character of Nelson Mandela, contextualizing them with the plot of the story. It was concluded that rugby as sport, was employed as an aggregating factor among people, as a hegemonic maintenance instrument of political power, in addition to acting as a formative element of national identity and mobilization mechanism of the masses there.

Keywords: Sport.
