Abstract

This article studies the transnational strategies used by the Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo to denounce the case of the disappeared during the Argentinian civil-military dictatorship of 1976-1983. Among the great number of worldwide contacts of the group, this work focuses on its relationship with the United States of America Embassy in Buenos Aires. General conclusions show that the transnational strategies of the Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo used to draw the attention of the United States of America to the case of the disappeared, which obtained greater results during Jimmy Carter's administration, despite the twists of his human rights foreign policy caused by domestic pressure. However, after Ronald Reagan's election, the tactics of the group to get aid from the government of the United States of America were blocked by the silent diplomacy of the new administration.
